Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a safe and exciting night as you welcomed 2009. Maybe you had small get together with friends, paid to attend a large elegant party or even just slept through the change of year. Or, perhaps you were in transit like me. Coming from a wonderfully warm evening with friends, I was on my way to the events uptown when midnight struck on the side of 4th street. A mere five minutes from making it, my significant other and I found ourselves listening to the cheers from a distance.

At first I found myself a bit disappointed, sad not to have been in the hustle and bustle of all that was going on. Then I realized that I didn’t really miss anything. Minutes changed and the hour turned and it would have happened no matter where I was. It then struck me that it all happens anyway. Every minute passes, every hour goes by and our only task is to not get caught up in expectation or assumptions, but rather celebrate each one as a creator in our own lives.

I could write this article all about resolutions and how to make them, but I’d rather talk about what to let go of and what to hold on to. I believe if you can manage those two, then the goals will easily follow. So, what will it be this year?

Letting Go.

As we shift each year into the next, we have an opportunity to mark a new measurement of success. For the year of 2009, you must let go of some things in order to attain others. What did not contribute to your success in 2008? You know that there are some things flashing like neon signs in your head. Why do those things not contribute to your life and your happiness anymore? Who will you be without them? What can you do NOW to begin releasing those toxins?

For me, it’s what has lovingly been nicknamed the “k’tude” You know, that attitude that rears up from time to time when you’re frustrated, embarrassed or fearful of something? It’s not something I’m proud of and because it’s a character trait, it’s one of the hardest to release. Yet, it’s still a part of me that doesn’t serve my life or anyone else’s. Most antagonizing of the k’tude lately is a new hobby I've picked up called Cuong Nhu - a form of karate. Just when I think I have the lesson we’re being taught, I find myself backwards or fumbling and I feel the attitude start to rise up. I’m learning how to release control and savor the journey…uncoordinated as it might be sometimes!...because that lesson is going to go on with or without me. Time will pass and my attitude is the only thing making those minutes unsavory. Bottom line: lose the k’tude in 2009 and tame my pride. It doesn’t add anything to my life!

For you, it might be a person, a habit or a career that you need to lose more than a personal demon. Whatever it is, you know it’s there and you know it’s dragging you down. Let it go so you can float through 2009 instead of hauling a bunch of baggage with you.

Holding On..

As the magnificent, talented human being that you are, it’s time to celebrate those facets of yourself! I ask all of my new clients to do this in their intro packet – make a list of 10-12 things about yourself (personal and physical traits) that you love and are proud of and want to nurture. What did you do well in 2008 and what are you thankful for? Those are the things you want to be carrying into the New Year.

For me, it’s my absolutely amazing friends, my strength in identifying my own skills, my ability to coach others to success, my curious personality and my creativity. Each time I reflect on those, I light up. I wouldn’t have loved last year so much without those things and I intend to incorporate them even more this year.

Are you willing to step into 2009 as a creator? Pushing forward step by step (and not look ahead at the 500th step you need to take) to continue collecting more of what energizes you and revitalizes you? You already have so much of what you need within you. Take a deep breath and reflect on what those positive, healthy traits are.

So, this year…set your goals. Just remember that without a good balance of letting go and holding on, you’ll be stuck exactly where you are. Let’s get to work! Please let me how I can support you in 2009. Happy New Year!

By: Barbara Mack

This year, you'll find a few new tidbits here and there included in SHIFT. One of those extra morsels will be an occasional guest writer. This month is a feature by an extraordinarily intuitive woman named Barbara Mack. Enjoy!

The literal meaning of words can move us great distances toward our goals. Take the word coach for example. How many meanings does it have today? One first impression probably matches the last coach experienced be it soccer, football, lacrosse, knitting, or life. Coach can be a horse drawn carriage, where you sit in a plane or a high end leather bag. Some of you may remember the series Coach on TV starring Craig Nelson and there is a Marvel Comics character in X-Force named Coach.

Webster’s Dictionary says coach is to instruct, direct or prompt, and to train intensively, implying that something that comes from outside you will direct what’s inside you. Our culture seems to have an unspoken expectation that if they sit down with a coach, read a self-help book or interact in a unique way with the world they will experience a miraculous change for the better.

Over the years I’ve been coached by many fabulous people and programs including lacrosse coaches, teachers, bosses, professional coaches, life coaches, recovery programs, ropes course facilitators, medicine men and a million self-help and business books.

Sometimes my life was profoundly affected for the better and other times the shared knowledge just washed away in the stream of life. Why is that?

My question today is, “What do I need to do to make coaching stick?”

If I watch the great teams, they all went back to the basics. In football that’s running, throwing, catching, blocking and tackling. In baseball it would be hitting, fielding and running. Basketball has passing, dribbling, shooting and rebounding. Great teams work the basics until the basics are instinct. They learn the plays until they execute them with their entire being.

What are the basics for life? I’m not sure. We could start with shelter, food and clothing, but that might be too basic. Let’s take for granted that if you are reading this post, food, clothing and shelter are present. The next basics might be body, mind, spirit or work, family, and church or even past, present and future. They could be truth, belief and strength.

For me, the basics are body, mind and spirit. I practice in several ways. First, I watch what I eat and how I move through the world. Sometimes that means no meat or sugar, sometimes that means eating whatever I want. Sometimes my body calls for exercise and sometimes for a rest. The practice is listening to what my body needs next and then finding a way to provide it. My mind gets practice learning something new all the time, participating in art, and coaching. For my spirit I practice prayer (talking to God), meditation (listening to God’s reply) and reading the Bible. Practicing my basics creates the fertile soil that allows coaching to take root and grow.

Since each person is different and enters coaching for different reasons, the basics would be different for everyone. So, here’s my suggestion…..

Define your basics,
Define what practice looks like for your basics
Listen to your coach
Practice, practice, practice and practice again.

Fall in love with the practice and you will surprise yourself with your results.

Give a Little, Gain a Lot

Steaming coffee on a frigid day. Strangers smiling as they hold open a door. Your car temperature reaching cozy as the frost on the window begins to melt. Tradition inviting you to open your doors to friends and family. Comfy scarves and warm hats. Snuggled moments on the couch with a blanket tucked up to your chin. Fireplaces filling the air with the smell of musk and cedar. Salutations greet your ears. Colorful lights beckon your gaze as you drive through the neighborhood. It’s winter and the holiday season is upon us.

Every year I love to Christmas shop. Maybe you want to curse me just for saying that, but I truly thrive on finding the perfect gifts each year. As easy as it is to get lost in the day to day shuffle, I always look forward to the intentionality that goes into finding a gift for each of my loved ones.

To me, gifts are symbols of appreciation for a relationship that is admired, respected and fulfilling. No matter what time of year, or for what reason, the tradition of giving should always be about remembering and honoring someone else.

Is Giving an Act of Love?

Indeed giving is an act of love…one of the top five love languages in fact. If you’ve never read The Five Love Languages, by Gary Chapman it needs to be the very first gift you buy…for yourself. Gary illustrates that gifts are visual symbols of love…which are more important to some people than others. If your primary love language is gift giving, you will place a lot of importance on the gift you’ve given or the gift you’ve received. Pay attention to those in your life who give often. Since this is an important act for them, it also means they appreciate receiving. Your gift to them should be quite thoughtful. Likewise, they are probably the individuals you most anticipate getting a gift from. They don’t need to be expensive tokens, but instead very thoughtful.

Finding the Perfect Gift

Reflect on the recipient. What passions do they have? What gives them energy? What items have they mentioned casually in passing? Remember their values. Think about what they won’t do for themselves. Happy memories you’ve shared with them. Any unusual hobbies they have. This is part of the gift – the act of acknowledging them before the purchase.

Remove Your Agenda

Keep their desires at heart. By releasing any implications of what is best for them or what they need, you truly give a gift that they deserve. Ask yourself if you wish they had the item you’re purchasing or if they would wish for it. Keep their values in mind, too. If they don’t like a lot of stuff in the house, keep their gift minimal or gift them with an experience rather than a material item. If they ask for gift certificates, honor that with stores they love instead of generic cards.

Do Your Research

Once an idea has captured your heart, research the potential of the gift. If they love food, consider certificates for restaurants, a subscription to a steak of the month club, cooking lessons or gourmet chef’s tips. If they love travel, look into items that make travel easier, websites that offer certificates for activities in popular areas or destination information (books or website subscriptions). Possibilities are endless. Once you narrowed down your focus, google it and see what ideas come up. You’d be surprised what’s out there!

Unique Gift Ideas

Of-the-month clubs: there are too many out there to name. Each month, a new wine, cheese, steak, coffee or even chocolate treat arrives at their door waiting to be savored!

Experiential gifts: instead of material gifts, give scuba diving lessons, comedy classes or a massage. Or, do something out of the ordinary and take them somewhere like the

Lazy Five Ranch

Lasting memories: whether you’re a husband, wife, mother, daughter, son or friend, most everyone loves pictures of themselves and their loved ones. Give the gift of a portrait sitting with a talented photographer.

Get creative: make something meaningful to help keep memories alive and add a personal touch to your gift. If you aren’t creative yourself, hire someone to evolve your idea into a physical gift.

Pass it on: if your loved one has a humanitarian heart, make a donation in their name to a charity they are passionate about.

Coaching: you know I had to! Give someone a month of coaching. Whether it’s one-on-one, admission to a workshop or an E-Course, coaching provides the opportunity to cultivate a passionate life. Click here to read what people are saying!

Click here to see what people are saying!

Savor the memories and make many more with your loved ones this year. I wish you a joyful holiday season filled with love, meaning and laughter. I know each of you are warm, spirited individuals. You wouldn’t be reading this newsletter each month if you weren’t. Enjoy putting aside a few minutes for those you love and don’t forget to reflect on your needs, values and wish lists as well! I look forward to seeing and hearing from you in 2009.

Time seems to be one of these untraceable factors of life. When talking to my clients,
I’m finding three distinct trends in the way they spend their time. Each trend has a light and
a dark side. Take a peek and ask yourself: How do I choose to spend my time?

“The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is.” - C.S. Lewis

Time seems to be one of those untraceable factors in life. Either you have too much or you have too little. Seldom do you seem to have ‘just enough.’ It either slips away or seems to last and last. When talking to my clients, I’m finding three distinct trends in the way they spend their time. Like anything, each trend has a light and a dark side. Take a peek and ask yourself: How do I choose to spend my time?

Keep a journal for a week detailing each task and for how long you worked on it. What do you notice?
DOER: You start and stop many different paths in a day, but never really finish anything.
THINKER: You have great intentions, but can’t get past the logistics of making it work.
TALKER: You have full days, but not with any significant time relating to your “newest project.”

TREND 1: DOER

“When people say to me: ‘How do you do so many things?’ I often answer them, without meaning
to be cruel: ‘How do you do so little?’ It seems to me that people have vast potential. Most people can do extraordinary things if they have the confidence or take the risks. Yet most people don't” - Philip Adams

Me? I’m a doer most of the time. I fill my days with as much as possible because I’m afraid I won’t
have time to do all that I want in life. At the end of the day, I’m either totally energized or completely drained.
	Sound familiar?

The Light Side – Things get done!! After the initial idea occurs, it doesn’t take long for
progress toward the vision to be made. Finding people, researching, setting up a plan and moving into
action are easy steps for you. Thinking leads to acting. If you’re a doer, chances are you’ve moved forward pretty rapidly in life personally and professionally. You don’t put up with much, you’re known as a risk
taker and others come to you often for advice.

The Dark Side – Ever heard the phrase look before you leap? Yeah…sometimes we doers miss
that step on the ladder. Plans don’t always go smoothly because we act so quickly. If you’ve “learned the
hard way” a few times, then you’re probably a doer. This mentality doesn’t always mesh well with others either. Sometimes warp speed is a bit scary for other people who like to think things through, research thoroughly and take baby steps. If you’re thinking, ‘who has time for that???’ then you are definitely in
this category. Keeping this fire going past the initial push is usually a challenge.

The Gray Matter – Instead of catapulting straight into roadrunner speed, take a moment and
assess whether the idea you’ve just had is really something that you even want to do. Is it logical to take
action right away, or are there more questions that need to be answered? Could you speak with someone
who has pursued your idea already? Is it something that still moves you toward where you want to go?
Is it a good use of your time? In relationships, it’s important to gauge whether you’re traveling the same
speed. Are you pushing or pulling and does that tension match your needs at the moment?

TREND 2: THINKER

"If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that remains is a compromise." - Robert Fritz

My friend Alice is a thinker. She has brilliant ideas and her friends love her advice, but when it comes
to taking action, she freezes. Even when she knows what she needs to do, she’s still so busy overanalyzing
that the decision is usually made by non-decision. If you think about doing things, but they never quite
make it into reality, then you are a thinker.

The Light Side – By studying all the angles, life is seldom a surprise. You’re always prepared
for the best and the worst and everything in between. Every outcome and every consequence has been
weighed. Your advice is top notch because usually you’ve thought of choices that your friends have not.
People flock to you when they need help with a decision.

The Dark Side – Instead of moving forward, you sit absorbed with inaction. Each decision
in the day seems overwhelming with all the choices you have. Choice itself becomes an enemy, which debilitates you from moving forward in any one direction. In relationships, it can become cumbersome
for your friends to follow all the options you put on the table. Likewise, it’s frustrating for you not feel
heard as you value the weight of your decisions.

The Gray Matter – To effectively move forward, try using your problem solving abilities to
present yourself with the choices at hand and assess what fears come up. Filter out any decisions that
definitely won’t work for you, which will narrow your options. Then, assess what weight this choice
really has on your forward movement. If it’s a menial day-to-day decision, choose what fits best and then
let go of the outcome. If it’s a big decision, then do weigh your options, talk it over with a friend or make
a list. In the end, whatever choice you make it better than inaction choosing for you!

TREND 3: TALKER

"The world has the habit of making room for the man whose words and actions show that he
knows where he is going." - Napolean Hill

My friend Keith is a talker. There’s always a new idea, always a new goal on the horizon. Everyone
who first meets Keith thinks he is a go-getter. As you get to know him, it’s quickly realized that Keith’s
	actions don’t match his words.

The Light Side – In order to make something “real,” sometimes you have to try it on by
saying it out loud first. By telling everyone your intended plans, it keeps you accountable and ensures
that people will keep asking about your proclamations. Also, by stating your bold moves, you’re forming
an identity in the way people see you.

The Dark Side – Unless you follow up on these verbal plans, eventually people are just going
to see you as crying wolf. In other words, you put forth an image that isn’t really you. It’s also hard on
your self esteem to continuously explain why things you’ve been talking about haven’t happened. If
you’re like Keith, you’re probably confused about your lack of results and wondering why things
aren’t happening. If you speak first, before thinking through how it will happen, you probably fit into
	this category.

The Gray Matter – Speaking up for what you want it great – but be sure you’re ready to
back those words up! Before making the next grand exclamation, check in with your life, your goals
and your values. Really examine your reasons for talking about what you want to do. What does it do
for you to tell everyone about it before you actually set it in motion? If you know the accountability
will inspire you to act, then shout it to the rooftops. If you’re finding that it simply makes you look
good, or seems like a good idea, then write it down and move on to something that you can get truly
	excited about.

We all carry aspects of each trend above. Which resonates deepest with you? How does your trend
help you move forward and how does it hold you back? What other trends do you need to work on in
order to more effectively manage your time? Remember, we each reach the future at the rate of sixty
minutes an hour. How do you use your time?

"When you cannot make up your mind which of two evenly balanced courses of action you
should take - choose the bolder." - William Joseph Slim

Beginning new is always a daunting task of unknowns. Sometimes, though,
we simply need to shift our perspectives back into a state of curiosity and feeling.
Sometimes you get to the end of a goal, look forward and only see one question:
            Now What?!?

Goal Accomplished...Now What?!?

So you feel like Rocky on top of the steps, pumping your fists into the air and jumping up and down.
Goal accomplished. Cue the credits. Job well done, but after the glory fades, as you begin to descend those steps,
sometimes you’re left with a huge question: ‘Now What?!?”

Who are you? How did you get here? Maybe you’ve just retired, sent your children off to school, reached a milestone
within your career or personal life or graduated from high school or college. No matter what the scenario, your vision of
where to go next is no longer clear.

You probably feel like you are beginning again, and in a way you are. But don’t discount what you’ve already accomplished.
Keep a mental (or a tangible) timeline of what you’ve done. All of that was necessary for you to be here today. None of your
steps were in vain. It’s just simply time to re-center and regroup.

First, check in with how you feel.
How are you today? Be honest about how you feel with your accomplishments and create a clear perspective regarding the choices
you have moving forward. Are you overwhelmed with decisions? Or are you staring at a blank slate? Are you excited, nervous,
confident? Are you frustrated? Once you identify what it is you want to move past, it becomes your next goal. Only by understanding
where you are can you move forward.

Second, assess your options.
No one is without options. No one is without choice. We simply feel lost in the journey sometimes. One of the answers I hear
most often from my clients is, “I don’t know.” Truth is, you do know. It just feels like too much work to dig up the answer. Whether
you’re feeling overwhelmed with decisions, or at a loss with where to go, write out all the possible directions you have available. Even
write down the ones that don’t interest you. There is valuable information to be drawn from your interests, so write down options
even if they don’t seem feasible or feel unrealistic.

Third, exercise choice.
Each item on your list is a choice. All too often we allow our decisions to be made through inaction. It’s still a choice to let the chips
fall where they may, or to wait long enough for the opportunity to pass. When you eliminate some choices it will clear your head about
where to go next by creating space to focus only on possibility. Mark off any item on your list that you don’t feel pulled toward.

Now, pick out those items that seem unrealistic, but oddly exciting. Why do they excite you? How would that direction create happiness?
Keep this realization in mind because before now it was an unconscious desire. Now that it’s conscious, work with it, ask for it and expect it
         to show up moving forward.

So, now you only have opportunity on your list .Which is progress from the uncertainty you began with. Create a new list containing
only opportunity. If you’re still not sold on any one direction, keep the list out and add items as they attract your attention.

Four, create a new script.
Even though you’re working on a new direction, you’re still the star of your new script. Except this time instead of getting your lines all at
once, you only get them once a week. Action infers accomplishment. Accomplishment is only attainable when you know what you’re working
toward. Otherwise, it’s just a blind stab in the dark. Think about the variables that need to occur to move you forward. What vision do you
have for the future? What do you know to be true moving forward? How will you measure whether a path is acceptable for optimum growth
and happiness? Once you are clear on the answers to these questions, you can begin to move forward with your opportunity list.

Arrange your opportunities in order of most attractive to least. Start with the first item on your list. Follow it until you’ve reached an answer.
If you’re not sure where to start, begin by looking around you. Who can you talk to? What research is needed? What questions do you have?
As you get answers, gauge whether it fits into your vision. If it doesn’t, mark it off and move on to your next opportunity.

Stepping forward will feel awkward at first. It’s the most necessary step though. Even if that step is blind and consists only of the internal
questions posed here. Each answer you come across will reveal more answers that you can possibly be aware of right now. Follow your heart
and remember the desires that become conscious along the way. They contain more information below the surface about your interests, needs
or wants than you can imagine. Don’t toss them aside too quickly.

Beginning new is always a daunting task of unknowns. Sometimes, though, we simply need to shift our perspectives back into a state of curiosity
and feeling. Remain open to suggestions, outside help and gentle nudges from the Universe. It doesn’t have to be a lonely path of discovery. You can
ask for help. Your answers are closer than you think they are. You just have to start climbing those stairs again one at a time.

You all remember the theme song from Friends. How often are your friends there for you, too? Visualize the five people you spend most of your time with. Would you be ecstatic or disappointed if I said they are direct reflection of you? My most recent conversations have been filled with questions, frustrations and revelations about building community. There are only a few steps to creating a strong, lasting community...in business or in your personal life. Here they are.

I'll Be There For You (Because You're There For Me, Too)

You all remember the theme song from Friends, written by the Rembrandts. Well, lately so many of my clients have expressed their frustration with a lack of community in their personal lives. This topic always strikes a chord with me. When I moved to Charlotte, I felt lonely and was without community for close to three years. While I was involved in activities and went out occasionally with people I met, I wasn’t finding or keeping the friends that I so badly wanted. Today I am surrounded by so many incredible people that I spend time with – I wish I had more time to devote to each of them individually! What was I doing wrong a few years ago?

Truth is, I was only guilty of not seeing and accepting the resources I had. We always have the support in our lives to do what we want to do. All we have to do is ask. Author Raymond Holliwell puts it this way, “No desire is felt until the supply is ready to appear.” Sure, that’s great and all, but are you wondering what the heck to do with that desire once it appears?

Honestly, there are only a few steps to creating a community…in business or in your personal life. They will involve a little fear and a little creativity, but if community is what you desire, and community is what you currently don’t have, what do you have to lose?

Here is what you need to attract a strong, lasting sense of connection:

Lose the Humble Mindset:
My first mistake when trying to “meet and greet” was a humble mindset. I kept thinking that the people I was meeting would call me if they wanted to spend time with me. It never occurred to me that they could be thinking the exact same thing! With the help of my coach at the time, I worked to shift my mindset into a state of excitement about sharing my personality with others and learning from theirs. Over time, I began to open up.

Everyone is worried about meeting people! We all have thousands of questions running through our heads…will they like me? Am I talking too much? Am I not talking enough? Am I talking about something interesting? Am I talking about something that is only interesting to me? It makes me tired just to type all those questions. When you click with someone, you feel it. You will want to spend more time with them and they with you. Be yourself, talk about what interests you and you’ll naturally attract the people who are interested in having that conversation.

Rework Your Definition:
Community comes with a variety of definitions. What does this word mean to you? What type of network would you like to build? Visualize what activities you would like to be doing, what personal values people surrounding you would have, the size of your support group and what communication you would have with them.

Without knowing who you want to surround you, it’s much harder to actually attract them into your life! The saying “needle in a haystack” comes to mind. This also takes the desperation out of finding the perfect people and makes you far more attractive to the new community that will find and support you. All because you are expressing what you want and being your true self.

Show Your Vulnerable Side:
Shift out of the mindset that people will come to you and instead, reach out to people who interest you. Schedule coffee, lunch or dinner. Eventually start pulling groups together so your connections can grow. If their values match, they should get along just fine with your other friends – even if they don’t participate in the same activities!

This was my most challenging step. I had to release my comfort zone and take the bull by the horns. I began approaching people I felt a small connection with, and began inviting people over to my house for dinner and I even started a game night to begin mingling. Before I knew it, my community was too big for just game nights. Soon there were monthly socials and even just girl’s nights (sorry boys!).

My first inclination before starting all this was that people wouldn’t want to spend time with me. Not because I wasn’t a pleasant enough person, but I couldn’t pinpoint what I had to offer. I was a shy girl, so it was painful for me to start approaching people. My truth quickly became that people who didn’t know me well enough or didn’t care to know me simply said no…and honestly, it wasn’t that painful to hear! Those that did know me and those that wanted to know me better accepted my invitations happily. I never felt lonely on the nights I extended invitations. Now, my life is filled with people I respect, love and am challenged by.

Once your community begins to grow, take a look at who is around you. Do you like what you see? If not, who are you letting in that you don’t want? Who was uninvited? What fear comes up in losing friends? Each step into the world of your true ambitions, interests and desires will open the door for others who are compatible and close the door to those that aren't. If you are looking around and completely content, congratulations – you are on your way to a strong, lasting sense of connection with yourself and the people you’ve chosen to surround yourself with.

It’s amazing who surfaces when you reveal your vulnerable side and speak up about what you need. Sometimes the "who" in the mirror is what will surprise you most. It was for me.

	    Momentum Coaching Update

June 20-22 marked a very powerful weekend for Momentum Coaching and eight fearless women.
It was the weekend of 2008’s FEED YOUR SOUL: Nourishment for Passionate Living women’s retreat.
Our location was absolutely perfect for space, growth and discovery on the 7.5 acres of walking trails and 5 bedroom "cottage" at the
Garden Spirit Retreat Center. As facilitators, Laura Neff and I could not have been more touched by these eight women. Their trust, honesty and strength absolutely saturated the weekend. We ate nourishing food, gave our spirits room to play and explored our higher selves for three days. What a playground! If you missed it, we’re sorry, but keep us in mind for next summer!

What if My Imagination Carried Me Away?

When I was a little girl, I used to make up everything. I didn’t lie (unless it was to win at board games), but I did let my imagination get the better of me quite often. My days were spent in crystal clear lagoons, eluding evil forest witches and finding treasures in the tops of trees. I sang songs that contained all of my own lyrics (not to mention a very special pitch that only a 6 year old girl can carry). At that time in my life, anything was possible and no one could touch me.

Suddenly, I stand in my twenty something shoes and the world has become very real and I very mortal. Things that once seemed big are now very small. Little things that used to roll off my shoulders now carry the weight of the world. I used to blissfully meander through life without much knowledge. Now, I’m in a hurry to share the vast knowledge that I have.

I giggle like that little girl as I write this because it’s so not me! Some is true, but most is what I’ve been fighting not to become. Growing up is necessary, and my imagination certainly isn’t what it used to be, but who says we have to lose our child-like minds? Why can’t the world still feel big, beautiful and breath taking? Why can’t our problems feel like they did when all we had to worry about was our big brother holding us down and tickling us?

Maybe, just maybe, our problems seem so big only because our perspectives are now so small. Maybe, just maybe, the world seems less awe-inspiring because our focus has become so narrow. Pause your mind from racing about all that needs to be done for just a moment and visualize the bigger picture. Bigger even than the image that just came up for you. And now stretch it even further. In that huge scope, does the to-do list still seem all that important?

When was the last time a new nugget of information, a new perspective or a change of scenery rocked your world? I mean really stopped you in your tracks? How big did the world seem then? Huge! And how big did your worries feel? Probably no bigger than the size of a grain of sand.

So, as an adult, when do you give your imagination permission to carry you away?
When does your perspective need challenging? In what areas of your life do you already think big? What would bigger look like?

Dreams begin with imagination. One of my friends handed me a dream card from her deck the other day. When I opened it, I giggled yet again. It said, “You are never given a wish or a dream without also being given the power to make it come true.” It was written by Richard Bach…God bless Richard Bach! Don’t we all need that reminder from time to time? I know I do, and I especially needed it in that moment.

So what happens when your imagination picks you up and shows you the bird’s eye view of your dream? It ignites passion! And passion, as you know, is one of my favorite things. Without passion, we would never get anything done. Negative passion allows us to stew in the present and get comfortable in the hot, boiling soup of latent comfort. But positive passion is a force to be reckoned with! It drives us forward with force, integrity and vision. If your imagination begins to meld with passion, the world had better duck for cover because you’re going to spin it upside down and turn it inside out with all that built up potential that you’ve been holding on to!

Passion also invites communication. Which means you will stop at nothing to seek, share and spurt information about your dream. Partners, investors, travel agents, friends and family alike will step up to the line to hand you what you need. Don’t hand it back, don’t act like you don’t deserve it. Your vision is unique, your desires are real and your dreams are worthy.

How will you know when you’re on the right track? You’ll feel like a kid again. Giddy with ice cream on your face, stomping around talking to strangers about your amazing adventure. So I suppose that the “now” we know is never really all that different from our child-like perspective. In truth, anything is possible and you are the only one standing in your way. Hmm...what are you willing to do about that?

Think of a quick snapshot memory. Something energizing – when life was abundantly overflowing with fulfilling friendships, truly cascading with love or rapidly moving toward your goals. One of those moments when you tilted your head back in laughter, enveloped someone with your love or shared a success with unabashed glee.

What was within you to cause such elation? Those were not external forces at work. Those scenarios were self-created. You extended the invitation to receive such joyous feelings. I’d be bold enough to say that everyone has experienced such a moment of excitement. Ever wonder what internal process creates those experiences? How do we make more of them? My hope is that this month’s newsletter will bring as much heat to your energy levels as we’re about to encounter in our summer days!

Achieving Daily Inspiration:

Open up!

Even as I write this, I am a student of each of these steps. How’s this for a story: I’m sitting in a friend’s backyard and these words are flowing forth. I stopped writing to take a brief moment to enjoy the breeze and reflect on how to illustrate opening oneself up. Suddenly the breeze kicked up and the pages of my notebook surrendered to the wind. Before long, my friend’s white cat had followed the wind across the backyard and into my lap. Not bad for only having written the two words: “open up.” I suppose it can be described in another pair of words: loosen up!

In order to do this, practice finding your breathing pattern, using a touchstone or simply closing your eyes for a moment with a deep breath. Whatever it takes to ground you back in your body during a stressful day or a distracting moment. When you can master opening up and loosening up on a daily basis, you may move on to #2, which is keen awareness.

Keen Awareness

In addition to practicing the act of being open, also begin to practice awareness. What is happening in those energizing moments and how do you feel about it? If I had been anyone else, I might not have noticed the symphony being created between the breeze, the pages of my journal and the white cat. Pay attention to the energy in your open moments. Take your time to form thoughts around the delight that you sensed and what created it. For me, it was the feeling of surrendering the focus I had on this article to a soft breeze blowing my hair and teasing me into enjoying the moment of sunshine and nature. For you, it will be something completely different. When you’ve started to pinpoint the commonality in your happiest moments, your next challenge is to practice personal acceptance.

Personal Acceptance

This step is one of the most difficult since it involves changing your own self-limiting beliefs. Most of us shush our thoughts when something intrigues or moves us. We turn instead to memories of someone who once looked at us funny or felt we were childish for being captured by something so small. Personal acceptance is about realizing when those small moments occur, understanding why you find energy in them and truly believing that you are a more complete person for noticing the world in such an intimate way. When you honestly say to yourself, “I love that I choose to surrender my valuable seconds to study what the wind feels like against my skin,” [insert your own energizing moment here] then you have begun to fully accept the daily gifts that life has to offer.

Let me put it another way. How does it feel when someone brings you a gift unexpectedly, or delivers a compliment out of the blue? Pretty good, right? Now, how many times do you try to give those gifts back or make excuses for why that compliment isn’t necessary? How often do you just say ‘thank you’ and leave it at that? Think of every moment you ar
