Dreaming in Full Color!

We all know this year is special because you still have 330 more progressive, dream-worthy, life-changing days to play with. My clients are always looking for new ways to visualize, realize and finalize their goals. One of my favorite ways to do so is through a dream board.

Dream boards, or road maps, are an exercise in visualization. As you visualize what you want for yourself this week, this month or this year, you create a collage to look at each day. Similar to writing down your goals and revisiting them each night before you go to bed, this serves as a piece of artwork detailing your goals and dreams that you can look at each day.

If you’re a visual creative, this might be your outlet. It’s a tradition I started practicing two years ago when I first heard about them. I loved the idea! What you will need is a stack of magazines, newspapers, scissors and double-sided tape. Usually, I purchase a standard poster board or piece of foam core and just fill it up. But, this year I purchased a sectioned picture frame. It’s great because it can be refilled each year and you can keep the old inserts.

Each section can be an area of your life that you would like to work on – such as happiness, career, love, success…etc. I used the 8.5 x 11 section for phrases and photos of goals I want for myself this year such as climbing, making natural, easy-flowing choices, personal mantras, etc. In one of the 4 x 6 sections I detailed the adventures I’d like to have this year (since traveling to see new places is really important to me). In another, I detailed goals for my business in terms of salary and the type of work I wanted to focus on. In the last, I illustrated my focus in the way of love in terms of family, friends and a future partner.

Begin to brainstorm about specific goals for each section. Make a list if it helps. Use as much detail as you possibly can. Want to increase your salary this year? Use a specific number. Want to lose weight this year? How much? Want to fall in love? What is he/she like? Want to buy a house? What does it look like? Be as specific as possible with your dream board.

Now the search begins. Scour your magazines, pull out your markers and begin to collect phrases, photos, colors and exact locations that illustrate your goals. Piece them together and then commit them to your board with glue or double-sided tape. When your board is complete, write the phrase, “This or something better is making it’s way into my life right now. I trust the Universe’s plan for me.”

Finally, put it up where you can see it or where you can take it out to look at it each day. Many people prefer by their bed, on their bathroom wall or on the refrigerator. Personally, I nailed mine to the wall front and center above my desk. I look at it every day as a reminder and it brings me energy. I’ll be having a gigantic year of growth and I hope you’ll join me in the dreaming process! You might be surprised by how quickly things begin to happen. To make dreams real is to make them visible, right?
